DIY Moisture Testing: How to Check for Hidden Water Damage

Water damage isn't always visible. Hidden moisture behind walls or under floors can rot framing and spawn mold. Here is how to find it before it destroys your home.

1. Visual Inspection Signs

Look for peeling paint, bubbling wallpaper, discolored spots on ceilings, or baseboards that appear warped or separated from the wall. A persistent musty smell is often the first indicator of hidden moisture.

2. The Tape Test

Tape a 2-foot square of clear plastic sheeting to a concrete floor or basement wall, sealing all edges tightly with duct tape. Wait 24 hours. If condensation forms underneath, you have moisture pushing through the foundation.

Pin-type meters measure resistance between two needles pushed into the material, while pinless meters use electromagnetic sensors to scan beneath the surface without causing damage. Test a known dry area first to establish a baseline.
